On Thursday, October 22, the Follow the Light Foundation awarded its coveted annual grant to Australian surfer and photographer Ray Collins.
The event was held at the Surf Heritage Foundation's headquarters in San Clemente, a veritable museum of vintage surfboards, photography, art and, well...heritage.
This was the fourth consecutive year that the Foundation has awarded $5000 to a deserving photographer in honor of the late Larry "Flame" Moore, the brilliant and hard-working Photo Editor of Surfing Magazine.
After a nearly three-year battle with brain cancer, Flame left behind a legacy of stunning photography and an army of photographers trained by him. Through his work at Surfing Magazine, Larry literally gave three decades of Surfing its "look." The Follow the Light Foundation (FTLF) was founded after Moore's passing in an attempt to continue his legacy of assisting up-and-coming photographers.
Previous award winners include the hyper-talented Chris Burkard, veteran New York lensman Matt Clark and San Diego's Todd Glaser. This year's judges (Peter Taras, Sam Olson, Aaron Chang, Leo Hetzel, Steve Wilkings, Jeff Hall, Todd Glaser, Chris Burkard and Candace Moore) viewed thousands of images by more than 60 entries before settling on five finalists: Myles McGuinness, Brian Nevins, Pat Ruddy, Carl Steindler, and the eventual winner Collins, who, in addition to surf photography, makes his living as a coal miner.
